Since all I did was to doanate a fingerboard blank, and am not doing any of the work (due to lack of experience), I had not even checked into the charity guitar thread until today.
The way I see it, there's the giving and the receiving. I'm confident that whichever very worthy organization on the short list receives the guitar (actually, the money from the sale of the guitar), will be very pleased.
So, I would concentrate on making sure that those who are performing a labor of love feel really good about the journey and the giving. Without vindictiveness or negativity of any sort, I would recommend that St. Jude's be put at the bottom of the list of possible recipients, and we should select another organization from the short list. I think this will fortify and nurture the love in the builders that are working the wood into a musical instrument, that will eventually become a pile of money, that will eventually nurture some person(s) in need, so that they will know that they are loved.
St. Jude's will survive (and prosper) without this gift, and quite possibly someone in their organization will champion the cause to remedy the situation that caused them to be dropped as the recipient. So, this may actually help St. Jude's and another worthy charity at the same time.
If another organization is approached, maybe the offer could be made something like: "a group of talented artisans would like to build a high-quality handbuilt guitar with your logo on the headstock, as a symbol of their goal and as a focus of their compassion. The guitar would be given freely for you to auction..."
As a minor participant in this process, I am willing to allow my vote (for the Koman breast cancer organization) to be deleted, and let the builders and people like Bob Cefalu (with the huge donations) be the voting body.
